Kevin the Kick

About Kevin:

  • Kevin the Kick is one of 'The Lads', a gang of sequenced percussion sequencers trying to muscle in on your music productions

  • Kevin is an Old Skool kick drum with plenty of drive and a good dose of proper sub-bass for moving big systems

  • Unlike his Old Skool ancestors Kevin offers a lot of control over the tone and shape of his sound

  • Kevin comes armed with a serious, grown up, sequencer - for maximum impact

About the circuit:

  • Like the TR-808, CR78 and others, Kevin's circuit is based around a 'ringing' band-pass filter

  • Kevin's filter was  designed by the lovely people at Surreal Machines and is a two pole bandpass Sallen Key zero delay feedback filter (ZDFF)

  • Kevin is NOT a TR-808 emulation but does share similar sound characteristics

Kevin's Controls

Kick Body - This is the fundamental tone of the kick

  1. Freq - Pitch - from a window-rattling 35Hz to super fast 75Hz

  2. Drive - Saturates the output of the filter - "like opening a door"

  3. Decay - From a deep 'Click' to just about long enough

Kick Peak - This creates a thump, or a knock, at the start of the kick

  1. Freq - Starting pitch of the kick, before it swoops down upon the floor

  2. Time - The time taken for the pitch to swoop down - 1ms - 50ms

  3. Slope - An exponential curve applied to the pitch sweep = softer/harder - kind of :/

The sequencer

Finally, a grown up percussion sequencer that is simple to use, fast and creativity enhancing

Don't be fooled by its benign appearance, this sequencer can supercharge your beats in seconds

Here's a video explaining the sequencer's functions

The Lads' Sequencer

Global Controls

Housekeeping stuff

  1. The K-Teck logo

  2. Device title and version number

  3. Preset display - for storing and recalling your presets

Global tone controls

  1. HiPass - A High Pass filter to remove too much sub or get a nasty click/knock

  2. LoPass - Another Surreal Machines filter to remove excess top end and subbify

  3. Gain - Output volume - also drives into that Surreal Machines Low Pass filter for extra oomph

[…] Kevin the kick is based on the 808/cr78 topology using a ZDF filter for the tone (the filter is designed by Surreal Machines). […]
